Online Consent to Participate in Research
We invite you to participate in a research study entitled “Fiction and social cognition.” This research is being conducted at the University of Oklahoma and is approved by its Institutional Review Board.
Please read this information sheet and contact us if you have any questions before agreeing to take part in this study. You must be at least 18 years old.
Purpose of the Research Study: The purpose of this study is to investigate how exposure to fiction in books and film relates to people's real world social interactions and beliefs.
Number of participants: Up to 600 people.
Procedures: In this survey, you will answer a few demographic questions and various short questionnaires. You will also be asked various questions about your media preferences and reading habits.
Length of Participation and Compensation: This survey should take no more than 20 minutes to complete.
Risks and Benefits: There are no risks and no benefits from being in this research. However, you may
find that some of the items on the questionnaire encourage unpleasant thoughts or feelings
Confidentiality: In published reports, there will be no information included that will make it possible to identify you. Research records will be stored securely and only approved researchers and the OU Institutional Review Board will have access to the records.
Voluntary Nature of the Study: Your participation is voluntary. You may decline to answer any question and may choose to withdraw at any time. If you withdraw or do not answer any question, you will not be penalized or lose benefits or services unrelated to the study.
