Informed Consent Form
Project title: Writing and Cognition
Principle Investigator: Dr. Jennifer Barnes
You are invited to participate in this research study entitled “Writing and cognition.” The study is being conducted at the University of Oklahoma, and has been approved by its Institutional Review Board. Participants must be at least 18 years old.
Please read this information sheet and contact us if you have any questions before agreeing to take part in this study.
Purpose of the Research Study: The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between writing about different subjects and cognitive processes. Your responses on will contribute to research on aesthetics and cognition.
Number of participants: Up to 500 participants will participate in this research.
Procedures: If you agree to be in this study, you will be asked to write a short description of a person or thing. You will then take a test, complete a survey containing demographic questions (e.g., what is your age, are you male or female), questions about your media consumption preferences (e.g., Do you prefer movies to television series? Which type of book do you read most often, fiction or nonfiction?), a test that asks you to judge the emotions of people based on photos of their eyes, and a few brief questionnaires. Please read all the questions carefully and answer honestly. Remember there are no right or wrong answers
Length of Participation: This online study should take you approximately 30 minutes to complete.
Risks and Benefits: There are no risks and no benefits from being in this study.
Confidentiality: In published reports, there will be no information included that will make it possible to identify you. Research records will be stored securely and only approved researchers will have access to the records. There are organizations that may inspect and/or copy your research records for quality assurance and data analysis. These organizations include the OU Institutional Review Board.
Voluntary Nature of the Study: Participation in this study is voluntary. If you withdraw or decline participation, you will not be penalized or lose benefits or services unrelated to the study. If you decide to participate, you may decline to answer any question and may choose to withdraw at any time. You will still receive credit for your participation.
